Why Are One-on-One Meetings Important?

one-on-one meetings are essential to great leadership

Great leadership starts with mentorship. Mentoring comes through one-on-one meetings with your direct reports. My contention is you should meet at least once per month with each of your direct reports, and then each of your direct reports should meet with theirs, and so on.

One-on-One Meetings Are Essential to Great Leadership

It is essential for everyone in your company to have that one-on-one time with their leader and have discussions about strategy and growth. It is an excellent opportunity for employees to learn to work “on” the business instead of just “in” it.

Your direct reports should prepare the agenda and include strategic discussion points as well as ideas to improve the business. This gives you an opportunity as a supervisor, manager, or mentor to help them improve, stretch, and meet their career goals. This also enables them to move through your organization to meet your corporate goals.

Successful Implementation of One-on-One Meetings

Your one-on-one meetings can be an hour, an hour and a half, or simply just a conversation. Here are some important tips:

  • Schedule a protected time in a protected space
  • Avoid directing the conversation as their boss
  • Discuss how they can get better, how the business can get better, and how you can be of assistance

Having these strategic conversations as opposed to a very, very low level of tactical conversation helps keep your team and your business growing. You may even actually end up with much better tactics this way. Remember, these are the folks that are able to execute that strategic vision you have for your organization.
